Substitutes

Being a substitute is a great opportunity for:
College students who want hands on experiences that they will actually get paid for
Parents who want to work around their children's school schedules
Retired teachers who only want to work a few days a week
AND..anyone else who has a few extra hours/days per week and wants to earn some extra income
EIASE is always looking for dependable, caring individuals who share our passion for providing exceptional learning experiences to our students in the absence of classroom teachers and assistants.
Substitute teachers and assistants are needed within all EIASE programs that include:
Treatment and Learning Centers (TLC) - classrooms located in Effingham, Humboldt and Kansas
LIFE Academy - classrooms located in Mattoon
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs - classrooms located in Mattoon
Project HELP Preschool Program - classrooms located in Bethany, Charleston, Kansas, Oakland, Marshall, Neoga, Stewardson-Strasburg and Windsor
You can choose locations that are close to your home and assignments as well.
Substitute Teacher
If you would like to substitute teach for EIASE, you will need to hold either a valid Professional Educator License (PEL) or a Substitute Teacher License (SUB) or Short Term Substitute License (STS) that is active and registered with ROE #11. Daily rate for a substitute teacher within an EIASE program is $125. Long term sub pay increases after 10 consecutive days within the same position and is calculated using the starting teacher salary schedule and jumps up to $213.45/day.

Applying for a Substitute Teacher License
In Illinois, there are different license options that allow you to become a Substitute Teacher. In order to be a Substitute Teacher for EIASE, you must hold a valid Professional Educator License (PEL), Substitute Teacher License (SUB) or a Short Term Substitute License (STS).
Professional Educator License (PEL):
Can substitute on current license - do not need SUB or STS license also
Valid for teaching all grades PK-12
License must be active and registered with ROE #11
Cannot teach for more than 120 days for any one certified teacher in the same school year - no limit on days unless retired
Substitute Teaching License (SUB):
Have a Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or enrolled in IL educator preparation program with 90 semester hours of coursework (beginning January 1, 2023)
Valid for teaching all grades PK-12
Cannot teach for more than 90 days for any one certified teacher in the same school year - no limit on total days
Application fee is $50*
Registration fee is $60
Valid for 5 years
Can be renewed

Short Term Substitute License (STS) - ONLY VALID THROUGH 06/30/2028:
Have Associate's degree or 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited institution
Valid to teaching all grades PK-12
Cannot substitute teach more than 5 consecutive days per licensed teacher
Must complete a training program provided by EIASE or ROE #11
Application fee is $25*
No fee to register with ROE #11
Cannot be reviewed - must make active steps to complete

ROE #11 will maintain on file all the required documents that include; a physical, finger prints, and a background check. Official transcripts will need to be sent directly from your university to ROE #11 to show a Bachelor's degree or 60 hours have been awarded. *You may be eligible to receive a refund for the application and registration fees within 18 months of the issuance of a Substitute Teacher License. You must provide evidence that you have substitute taught for a minimum of 10 full school days within the first year of issuance. If you work with us for 10 days, you will complete FORM 73-02 "Substitute License Fee Refund Request" and we will then verify and submit it to ISBE on your behalf so that a refund will be credited back to you. Educators working on a Substitute License will receive a $50 refund and $25 if worked on a Short-Term Substitute License.
Substitute Classroom Paraprofessional
A classroom paraprofessional supports the instruction of the teacher and the learning of the students within the classroom. In order to be a classroom assistant you must meet the following qualifications:
Be at least 19 years of age (or 18 if working in PreK - 8th grade setting beginning January 1, 2023)
Have 1 of the Following:
Associate's degree or higher
60 semester hours of coursework
High School Diploma or GED and a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro (ROE # 11 offers the ETS Parapro Exam, see below for more info)
High School Diploma or GED and the following scores on the ACT Workkeys:
Applied Mathematics/Applied Math — 4
Reading for Information/Workplace Documents — 4

You will need to obtain a paraprofessional license issued by ISBE and registered with ROE #11.
Short-Term Paraprofessional Approval (only through 06/30/2025)
Are you someone who does not meet the requirements as listed above for a paraprofessional but you do have a high school diploma or the equivalent? Then you too can be a classroom assistant if you apply for a short-term paraprofessional approval from ISBE.
Short-Term Paraprofessional Approval:
Have a high school diploma (or the equivalent) or higher
Valid for 3 years
Cannot be renewed - while working on the short-term approval, must be fulfilling requirements for the full license to continue to be employed
Only available through June 30, 2025
